After my first year of medical school, I dropped out to join an ashrama.
I was 19 years old and had worked extremely hard to get into medical school. I had not got in straight after school despite getting top marks and I had excelled in the first year of Science to finally be accepted into the MBChB Medical degree. I was finally in my dream studies and was ready to learn medicine.
The more I place myself in the niche of women’s health – the more there is a resistance and a huge triggering among male energies or forces. The stronger the forces to discipline, and control; and use material power become.
Because the more I place myself in service for women’s health – the more I stand in a place where I need to be in integrity with so many things in order to hold that service.
There are certain things that flatten all ego and bring us down to real levels. The journey of being born and the journey of dying. And I think sickness can come pretty close too.
The reason I am elaborating on all this and emphasizing the humanness in healthcare is because of the overt profound lack of it in general.
In retrospect it all makes sense. Just the previous year I had felt strongly that when I have my consulting rooms I will make them into a warm cosy and nurturing experience for my clients. I would not have the conventional desk, examination table, clinical doctor experience and setup. I wanted red and warmth and lots of atmosphere to facilitate and support women getting true healing away from the clinical picture we have been socialised to accept as women’s healthcare.
Another teeny peep into the reality of South Africa’s living. At the end of the day you remember all the people (patients) that you touched sides with. Some more than others.
At 930 am I called his name and he came in limping; leaning on another man, helping him in, and the lady security guard. His drip was empty with dry blood…
